Regensburg´s Peterskirchlein

Regensburg's Peterskirchlein was commissioned in 1806 at the first Catholic cemetery outside the city by the then cathedral priest Bishop Georg Michael. It was not until 1821 that the little church was completed in its present form with nave and west tower. St. Peter's cemetery, which was abandoned in 1873, contributes to the church's present name. Since 1933, the grounds of the church have been the property of the town. The church building is managed by the municipality of Niedermünster

The art group of the Konrad Middle School of the 7th grade worked with their teacher Kerstin Bartmann over several weeks to make passers-by more aware of St. Peter's Church. In cooperation with the host, Pastor Gerl, the Orthodox community and the social initiatives, the students asked questions about the situation and perspective of the place. The building and its surroundings were observed by the students at different times of the day and documented photographically. The situation in the social hotspot immediately raised concerns among the students and the question of how St. Peter's Church could be made accessible to a wider public and how the sacred building could be appreciated. Problematic impressions and experiences, such as lack of lighting, no greenery or missing toilets were collected and documented in class. Together, practicable solutions were sought. In interdisciplinary art lessons, the group designed an illustrated questionnaire for questioning passers-by, approaches to solutions for the problems identified and ideas on how to make the public aware of the little church.

An installation consisting of signs, prohibitions and commandments made it clear what the students felt the building deserved: respect and a perspective for the future.

This was musically and artistically staged as a temporary installation on 23 June 2018 with a colourful supporting programme.
